The Certificate III in Outdoor Leadership (SIS30619) is a nationally recognised qualification that provides the skills and knowledge required to lead and supervise participants in outdoor recreation activities.

This qualification prepares leaders to excel in a variety of settings, from indoor centres to outdoor adventure learning centres and camps, to roles that are field based yet close to essential resources.

This course opens doors to a dynamic career across multiple sectors, allowing graduates to engage with commercial enterprises, non-profit organisations and government agencies. It’s an ideal choice for those passionate about leading outdoor recreation activities and making a positive impact on individuals and communities through their work.

About the qualification

Conducted over 6 – 12 months incorporating online learning for theory, and in-the field activities and assessment the Certificate III in outdoor leadership is the entry ticket to roles in the outdoor sector.

The full cost of this qualification is $5,500 (GST free). Whilst all efforts are made to keep this cost constant, depending on the delivery location, additional fees for camping or accommodation may apply. You will be notified of this in advance of the activitiy.

Core Skills Module:

  • Begin with our online core skills module, providing the foundational knowledge needed for all specialisations. This module is self-paced, allowing you to start at any time and progress at your own speed.

Specialisations:

  • After completing the core skills module, choose from various specialisations tailored to your interests. These are offered multiple times throughout the year, giving you the flexibility to select dates that suit your schedule.

Units of Competency

To receive the Certificate III in Outdoor Leadership, the student must complete a total of 22 Units of Competency. This includes 9 core units and 13 electives. 

The standard Certificate III ($5,500) contains the following units of competency.

These have been selected after extensive consultation with outdoor education providers as fit for purpose at the entry level for work within general outdoor education centres.

Competency groups can be added (at an additional cost) to expand your qualification at an additional price. Examples include Abseiling and Climbing artificial surfaces (climbing walls, challenge course (high ropes), wilderness first aid, etc).

With a background in leading outdoor activities internationally, coupled with a Bachelor of Education, Hayden is an industry leading Outdoor trainer and facilitator. Hayden has spent over a decade in the outdoor community leading small and large groups through both simple and complex activitites domestically, and abroad. This qualification reflects the role of leaders who can work in a range of settings including indoor centres and outdoor adventure learning centres and camps, or relatively close to base in the field. Possible roles include:

Can I apply for credit transfer?

If you have completed an accredited qualification or recognised units of study with a Registered Training Organisation, you may be eligible for a credit transfer.

Trainers will need to review if your accredited qualification or recognised units are still within a current training package or are equivalent to the current training package or units. Discuss your previous educational qualifications with your trainer to see if this is a possibility for you.

Can I apply for recognition of prior learning?

RPL is available to any learner who can provide evidence of competency for the units offered within the qualification. Please contact us for more information on this process and how to apply.

What are the entry requirements for the course?

There are no entry requirements for this qualification. However to ensure readiness for this course, we suggest that you possess:

  • Sufficient physical fitness for engaging in outdoor recreational activities, including bushwalking and canoeing.
  • The capability to administer First Aid, including performing CPR while in a kneeling position.
  • Effective time management skills.
  • Prior experience with computers, along with access to the internet and a computer or a mobile device.
